Re-posting for the record from alternative thread.
Hello!
Reading up on and getting really interested in PPI especially in Canada.
I'm a second-year student at UBC Law and am thinking student club for law kids interested in internet, privacy, copyright law, etc.
Going to investigate more and see what opportunities are available at school.
What sort of things need doing?
|

Welcome Rowan,
If your particularly interested in PPI, consider making your club bigger than just a law-kids club, but a club that deals with internet/privacy/copyright issues from a number of perspectives. Perhaps have a legal subgroup in this club if you are keen in really digging into the legal depths of IP law.
...Just a thought because I think there are a number of people from all kinds of disciplines who seem want to get involved and are just waiting for some coordinators like you to set it up... an exclusive law kids group would be great as well!

| After talking with a swede Pirate, he says he doesn't like the fact we're splintering onto our own forum. I don't have the log, but he mentioned the use of PirateWeb. I'll look into it a little more. |

Being an independent musician and a HUGE fan of art in general the PP's stance on copyright law and freedom of information speaks volumes to me, and being a resident of the planet Earth their views on privacy for the individual is incredibly important to me.
Having just turned legal voting age a few months ago I'd been wondering about what I was gonna do when the next election time came rolling around, and now I've got my answer. People need to be made aware of the issue of privacy in the modern age and Canada should be at the forefront of forwards thinking policy and attitude.
So here I am, and I'm ready to help out any way I can. I'll start by simply trying to spread the word around the city I live in (Barrie, Ontario by the way) and trying to drum up awareness and maybe a little support for the PP. Anyone in the area, gimme a shout, let's band together and help lay the foundation for a federally recognized Pirate Party in Canada!
I can be reached at wonthefu at hotmail and at ghytwembpang at gmail for anyone interested, and in the meantime I'll be reading up some more and plotting ways I can spread awareness. |

Hi Everyone, I'm hailing from Vancouver.
I heard Rick Falkvinge speak just a few days ago at Open Web Vancouver, and decided to put my ear a little closer to the fire.
No doubt like many of you, I follow the blog of our fellow Canadian, Dr. Michael Geist, and try to keep up with news of our own 'pirate bay' law suit involving the isoHunt.
Thanks to everyone who posted links to resources, like the political party registration guidelines at Elections Canada (it's good reading)
I'm no politico, but I've been fortunate enough to do a little bit of grass-roots work before. Here's a little bit of what I've learned; I hope it's helpful to those feeling a bit out of their depth.
1) If anyone has links to any blogs, sites, and other online resources, please post 'em. If you know of a book or pamphlet that should be required reading, share the details.
2) Learn as much as you can about PP related topics. What is the PP? What are Canada's issues around copyright and other information related laws? Are there issues specific to your province? Ask people for information. Talk to your local politician, your professors, book store owners, the guy that runs your local DVD rental place. What are their concerns? What resources are they point you to? And of course, let us know about it here. If you hear about something and can't get your brain around it, go ahead and ask here too, because someone will post something that addresses it. Hopefully!
3) Find out what pirate-related stuff is happening in your area and let us know about it here. Details about upcoming events, coffee houses, speakers, rallies, courses, court cases, you name it. Even posting about an event afterward and telling us the highlights is inspiring, and may be helpful later on. For instance, others may be checking this forum later, and say 'hey! I was at the event!' and feel (rightly) a little more connected to this whole abstract 'pirate' thing.
By the way, if any Swedes (is that correct? Swedens? Swedish? Sorry if I say it wrong) are reading this post, then congratulations to all your countryfolk who put the PP into the EU parliament!
Happy summer everyone! |
